Ancient healing for modern living

Acupuncture wrist needle

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of sterile, single-use needles at specific points on the body.

The needles are inserted into the skin and either removed quickly, or left in place for a while, depending on the result intended. The needles measure an average width of 0.13mm - as fine as a human hair. If needle insertion is felt at all, it can be a momentary sensation or a slight dull ache on the point.

As well as addressing chronic pain and musculo-sketelal issues, a growing body of evidence-based clinical research is discovering that acupuncture can trigger the body's healing process by calming the central nervous system, regulating hormones and releasing endorphins.

Pulse Reading

In classical Five Element acupuncture, pulse reading, tongue inspection, abdominal palpation, and the observation of how we speak and carry our bodies, all form essential components in the art of the Chinese Medicine diagnosis.

Pulses will be taken regularly throughout treatment to assess effectiveness of points needled and as a guide for further treatments.

Moxibustion

Five Element acupuncture uses a dried herb, moxa, rolled into tiny pyramids, momentarily placed directly onto acupuncture points and lit, warming and stimulating circulation and supporting the flow of qi.

Moxa is particularly effective in supporting fertility, easing digestive issues and relieving stress. It forms a central tenet of Five Element acupuncture treatment.

Cupping

Cupping therapy gently pulls superficial tissue, stretching the connective tissue where blockages or stagnation may reside.

Creating this immediate myofascial release; muscles are soothed, pain is eased, and incoming pathogens are quickly released. It is also a powerful technique for emotional imbalances, digestive issues, asthma and musculo-skeletal injury.

Benefits of treatment

As well as improvement in their symptoms, patients often report these ‘side-effects’ of acupuncture treatment:

  • Increased energy

  • Improved quality of sleep

  • Reduction or elimination of chronic stress

  • Emotional balance, vitality and motivation

  • Increased mental clarity

  • Enhanced spiritual and emotional growth

  • Improved metabolism

  • Less cravings, habitual behaviours, and addictive tendencies
