Frequently asked questions
Is it safe?
Five-Element Acupuncture is one of the safest complementary medical treatments. All needles are single-use and sterile. I abide by strict hygiene practices following in accordance with the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) member association guidelines and my local council byelaws.
Does it hurt?
Acupuncture needles are very small, hair-fine and solid. If sensation is felt at all, it may be a momentary sting, or a dull ache as I adjust the needle. This is different for every person and only lasts for a few moments.
How will I feel afterwards?
Everyone responds differently to treatment. Some patients may feel relaxed and want to rest, whereas others feel energised and vitalised. You may return to work after a treatment, but many prefer to have a relaxing day and to let the effects of treatment sink in.
Very occasionally symptoms may worsen shortly after the first treatment. This is usually short-lived and is seen as a good sign of healing and should be reported back to me.
Can I have acupuncture and take my medication?
Yes, acupuncture does not interfere with your medication. As symptoms improve, you may feel ready to discuss your medications with your GP. I am happy to work with healthcare providers and/or your GP and make referrals if requested. Always update me on any changes to your medication, as I will take this into consideration when planning your treatments.
How many treatments will I need?
Single appointments can be booked with me, although I highly recommend an initial course of 5 weekly treatments if possible. Weekly appointments will help to maintain improvements at the early stages until your body is able to sustain these itself for longer periods of time. When this stage has been reached, you only may need to come a few times a year or seasonally as a preventative measure.
Do I need to tell my doctor?
It is completely up to you whether you tell your doctor about receiving acupuncture treatment. Many doctors are supportive of acupuncture and will not discourage a patient from receiving treatment. I am happy to discuss treatment and provide information to your GP if required.
